One indicator to observe the trend of CMMI Adoption in India is to find out the number of CMMI SCAMPI Appraisals that are carried out in the country. To be exact, 143 CMMI SCAMPI Appraisals were carried out in India in the Year 2012 and 188 appraisals were carried out in India in the Year 2013. When you compare this number in China, the number of appraisals carried out in China in the year 2012 was 558 and in the year 2013 was 646. It is clear from the above that the adoption of CMMI in China in IT industry is much higher compared to that of India. Since CMMI is a process model that is a step towards excellence, it needs to be examined whether the focus in the IT industry in India is more towards an average performance? There is no easy answer to this question, however, it is observed globally that organizations do try to adopt and get appraised for CMMI Model to achieve excellence and also to provide an assurance to the customer about their credibility. The lesser number with respect to CMMI Appraisals in India do give a clue on where our focus should shift to and where should we direct our energies.
