Does successful completion of SCAMPI B Assessment guarantee a successful SCAMPI A Assessment?

Dear CMMI Consultant, our organization has successfully completed the SCAMPI B Assessment for CMMI Maturity Level 3. Does that mean we will successfully complete the SCAMPI A Assessment also?

Most of the organizations opt for SCAMPI B Assessment before going for SCAMPI A Assessment. They want to make sure that their efforts are in right direction. They think that successful completion of SCAMPI B will result in the successful completion of SCAMPI A also.

This is due to the misconception that successful completion of SCAMPI B leads to successful completion of SCAMPI A. In this post let’s analyse what is the similarity and difference between SCAMPI B and SCAMPI A.

What to expect from SCAMPI B Assessment?

• Output from SCAMPI B is in the form of detailed findings describing the strengths. and weaknesses of organizational processes relative to the CMMI Model under implementation.
• Detailed Report also shows Practice characterizations in terms of practices and goals satisfied for targeted CMMI Maturity Level.
• Report also provides input on the issues found in the organizational processes.
• Act as rehearsal for participants in terms of Documentation and Interviews.

SCAMPI B Assessment does not result in rating and it involves medium amount of objective evidences, resources and team size.

What to expect from SCAMPI A Assessment?

• This is the Formal Assessment method from CMMI Institute (earlier SEI) for a Targeted Maturity Level.
• Since CMMI-DEV V1.3 evidences are collection in the form of “Discovery and Verification of Evidence Document” which contains findings describing the strengths of organizational processes relative to the CMMI Model under implementation.
• Output from SCAMPI A is in the form of ratings, which are used for approval (or rejection) of Appraisal Results by CMMI Institute (earlier SEI).
• On Successful Completion, organization name (if opted for) will appear on the Published Appraisal Results website maintained by CMMI Institute (earlier SEI).
• Detailed Report also shows Practice characterizations in terms of practices and goals satisfied for targeted CMMI Maturity Level.

SCAMPI A Assessment results in rating and it involves maximum amount of objective evidences, resources and team size.

Does successful completion of SCAMPI B leads to Completion of SCAMPI A?

A successful completion of SCAMPI B provides vital information on the status and progress of preparation of the organization undergoing SCAMPI B. It is an indicator for the status of the effort of the resources and status of the artefacts produced as evidences.

But SCAMPI B certainly is not an assurance for SCAMPI A success. Instead it provides indicators for the different activities and evidences and provides opportunities for improvement.
