What is Organizational Process Focus (OPF) and how it helps in Process Improvement?

Organizational Process Focus (OPF) is CMMI Maturity Level 3 Process Area under the Process Management category.

It helps in the planning of the process improvement, deploying organizational process improvements and sharing the project team experiences in the form of lessons learn and artifacts prepared.

Organizational Process Focus (OPF) Implementation Steps

Identify Process Improvement Opportunities: Process needs and objectives shall be identified for process improvement. This includes identification of all applicable standards, processes, policies, procedures and associated artefacts. Refer to Measurement Analysis Reports and QA Reports for identifying process Quantitative and Qualitative improvement ideas. Document these improvement objectives.

Conduct Process Appraisal: Organizational Processes shall be assessed and appraised periodically in order to find their strengths and weakness. Improvements shall be planned, scheduled and conducted. In the plan Improvement shall be short-listed and prioritised.

Plan and Execute Process Action Plans: Action Plans for Processes and processes assets shall be planned and executed. Action Plan shall cover process infrastructure required for implementation, improvement objectives, addressed improvements, tracking mechanism, piloting required, roles and responsibilities, resources, schedule, risks etc. Review and review the action plans as necessary. Next step is to implement the Process Action Plans as per the Plans and to monitor the implementation.

Maintain Organizational Process Assets: Organizational Process Assets shall be deployed across the organization so that everyone in the organization can easily access them. This shall include the standard processes, projects documentation, tailoring guidelines, SDLC model description, training material, documentation of changes, support material etc. Implementation of Process Assets shall be monitored and learning from projects shall be deployed to the Process Assets. These include project plans, estimations, risks database, issues logs, lessons learnt, measurement analysis reports etc.

OPF helps in the process improvement by continuos improvement of the Processes and other Process Assets. It helps in the deployment of the process assets across the organization. It also helps in sharing of the lessons learnt by project teams across the organization.
