What are different overheads/burdens imposed by CMMI for Development on Software Development Team?

CMMI FAQ 0

30th May, 2013

CMMI for Development is a Quality Framework meant for Software Engineering Organizations working with Software Development or Enhancements activities. CMMI Model helps in the Process Improvement activities in the right direction and with right amount of focus which increases with the Maturity Levels i.e. from Maturity Level 2 to Maturity Level 5.

It is true that CMMI requires Evidences of the Work Practices performed in compliance to the CMMI Process Areas and Specific Practices. At the same time CMMI does not force Process Implementers to follow a particular form of documentation in order to prepare evidence for the Specific Practices and Process Areas. In fact CMMI Practitioners are free to use any automated tool (COTS or Custom) to prepare the work product of their day to day activities.

Overhead added by CMMI on the Software Development Team working with Automated Tool

The care should be taken to select or develop the automated tool in such a way that the record maintained in the tool should be self sufficient to cover the required Specific Practices and Processes Areas for the targeted Maturity Level. The information in the tool does not need to be consolidated on a single page may be divided among multiple screens (form) as convenient to the users of the tool.

Process Gap Assessment for Tool Implementation can provide the important information regarding the Gaps with respect to the targeted Process Areas (of the Maturity Level) and the changes required in the Tool to make it complaint with the CMMI Model Requirements. Experienced CMMI Consultant can conduct the Process Gap Assessment in an efficient and precise manner and can provide the detailed report highlighting the Positive Compliance and Non Compliance according to the CMMI Model requirements.

Process Gap Assessment for these templates and associated processes and other artefacts can provide a better insight on the compliance level of the QMS. Experienced CMMI Consultant can conduct the Process Gap Assessment for these documentation can provide the detailed report highlighting the Positive Compliance and Non Compliance according to the CMMI Model requirements.
