How to achieve balance between the theoretical and practical implementation for CMMI?

CMMI FAQ 0

20th March, 2013

Lets us first try to understand what CMMI requires from a CMMI Implementer (i.e. your organization).

As we all know CMMI is a collection of best practices. In words of CMMI (text taken from CMMI Model):

“Like other CMMs, CMMI models provide guidance to use when developing processes. CMMI models are not processes or process descriptions. The actual processes used in an organization depend on many factors, including application domains and organization structure and size. In particular, the process areas of a CMMI model typically do not map one to one with the processes used in your organization.”

As we can see CMMI model is not a collection of processes rather it provides guidance for creation of processes that should be used in organization for implementation of processes.

Hence we should use the information available in CMMI Model  in a pragmatic and practical manner to develop the solution based on rational and linear processes.

How do we be sure that our processes are CMMI Compliant?

Now how do we know what is defined in CMMI Model is available in the processes which we have created for our organization. For this a GAP Analysis can be conducted by mapping each process and sub-processes to the CMMI Model Process Areas and Sub-Practices. This will give you a clear picture on the compliance level of processes with CMMI Model.

If you do not have resources to conduct Process Gap Analysis, DQS India can provide services for Process Gap Analysis. This Gap Analysis Report contains clear mapping of the positive compliances, non compliances (Gaps). This enables you to close those gaps and make your processes CMMI Compliant.

Balance between theoretical and practical implementation of CMMI

CMMI does not instruct us to follow a particular approach for doing a work (or practice) we are free to do it in our own way. This makes us free to do the activity the way our organizational culture, team constituents, client engagements and regulatory requirements allow (permits). We are free to use any tools to make process implementation easier for project teams.

Rather it is recommended to use tools as much as possible to automate the process.

This way we can achieve a balance between theoretical and practical implementation of CMMI.
