Dear CMMI Consultant, we have just completed our CMMI Appraisal for CMMI Maturity Level 2 successfully, now what next?

First of all congratulations for completing SCAMPI Assessment and having your organization assessed for CMMI Maturity Level 2. Within few weeks your appraisal results will be published by CMMI Institute (formerly SEI). You can view all published results at SEI Pars Website (https://sas.cmmiinstitute.com/pars/pars.aspx). You can filter records for a year and targeted maturity level.

Now let’s talk about the post appraisal activities. Once the CMMI Appraisal is completed everyone tends to feel relaxed and think that all work is done and now nothing more is required. That statement is true to some extent but requires little shaping. Let’s analyse it. You are true that all the work for the Assessment for Maturity Level 2 has been done and results are also wonderful.

Now you have to think do you want to move ahead on the path of Process Improvement and want to have better control on projects and important attributes like time, cost, resources, and client satisfaction. If answer is yes then completion of CMMI Maturity Level 2 successfully is just a start of journey. And what you have just achieved is just passing a milestone successfully.

Now what next after completion of SCAMPI A Appraisal

After ML2 organization should atleast move to the Maturity Level 3 for real benefit of process improvement. Even if you did not move for Maturity Level 3 you should keep a focus on process improvement and should sustain process improvement in the organization.

To have real benefit of process improvement, you have to keep a focus on following activities:

  • QMS Upgradation for next Maturity Levels
  • Continuous Implementation of Processes in projects
  • Regular audits of projects
  • Closure of NCs found in audits
  • Training of Project Team Members
  • Planning and Preparation of next Appraisals

Most of these activities should be performed by the person doing the activity and no over head should be imposed on other staff/person. CMMI Implementation should become the way of life for staff at organization.
