How can you enhance the involvement of people in a CMMI Consulting Program?

CMMI FAQ 0

20th August, 2014

The involvement of people is a key ingredient for the success of CMMI Consulting and Appraisal Program. The – us and them – divide can be easily covered by using some simple steps during the CMMI Consulting process. The involvement of people can start from the day one where a session or interactive workshop can lead to management of expectations at both ends. There are questions and apprehensions in the minds of stakeholders. These can be resolved with constructive fact-based replies. This can start building up the buy-in process. Typical apprehensions that are observed are related to process-overburdening, extra-documentation, extra-time usage, missing of deadlines, not enough value for money, etc. All these apprehensions can be resolved with definitive answers with case-studies from CMMI Consulting experience. A good CMMI Consultant builds up his case-study database and this is the time to show the stuff. During the Gap Assessment and Implementation Phase also, the involvement of people can be enhanced by one to one interactions with the project team leader and team members rather than acting through the CMMI Coordinator using the CMMI Coordinator’ help for this. The perspective of the project team members have to be understood while confirming or deciding the gaps for CMMI requirements. The logic of identifying the gaps has to be clearly explained in the way the team member understands and not the way in which CMMI model presents it. Once again, citing of examples and case-studies can be used as a support by the capable CMMI Consultant. Another interesting way in enhancing the involvement of people is by creating their personal and professional interest at individual level for the CMMI Consulting and Appraisal Program. It can be shared with the project team members and stakeholders that the CMMI Model provides a framework for enhancing the individual’s professional excellence. Certain activities like DAR and RSKM are useful at every point in life. It is not an exaggeration to say that CMMI model enhances the individual’s way of thinking and the way he carries out his professional activities. There has been a marked difference in the performance and professional management capability of Project Managers who have worked for the CMMI Model. Their team respects them more in general because of the enhanced professional capabilities. A group of ATMs – Assessment Team Members – who got involved in CMMI Appraisal rose up the ranks faster because of their better Project Management and Team Management skills acquired during CMMI Appraisal program. Hence a good CMMI Consulting Initiative is inclusive and builds up capital for all involved.
