For the above-mentioned question, CMMI consultants may take inputs from the following inputs.

Configuration Management (CM) process area helps in establishing and maintaining the integrity of work products using configuration identification, configuration control, configuration status accounting, and configuration audits to ensure pertinent versions of software work products are traceable to requirements.

Work product word mentioned here includes the products that are to be delivered to customer, designated internal work products, acquired products, tools, and other items used in creating and describing these work products.

Input

Input for managing the Configuration Management:

  • Documents pertaining to project initiation and execution
  • Any input to the planning phase
  • Product or product components requiring delivery to customer

Activities

Activities are conducted for Configuration Management:

  • Identification of Configuration Items
  • Establishing Configuration Management System
  • Establishing Baselines

Change control procedure

Following are steps for typical the change control procedure:

  • Logging the Change Request
  • Categorize, prioritize and analyze impact of change requests
  • Take approval from Change Control Board
  • Implement Changes
  • Base-line work products
  • Monitor Change Requests
  • Perform Configuration Audit
  • Release base-lined work product
  • Change Request Closure

Outputs

Following outputs are created during the implementation of the Configuration Management activities:

  • Configuration Management Plan
  • Base lined CI’s
  • Master List of CI’s
  • Change Request Form
  • Change Request Log
  • Baseline Audi Checklist
  • Delivery Audit Checklist

The above is not an exhaustive coverage of the Configuration Management (CM), CMMI Process Areas but is substantive enough for CMMI Consultants to create a good foundation of the Configuration Management process in an organization.
