As CMMI Consultant, you may be asked to give example of the importance of Requirements Analysis in Defence Industry. Here is a case study from real life which CMMI Consultant can use to illustrate this point:

CMMI FAQ 0

14th June, 2018

Recently in “The Week” magazine of edition dated May 27, 2018, on P.Nos.  22-23 there was an article on the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). In this article Dr. S. Christopher, Chairman DRDO, was asked about the problem with the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) use in Army’s carrier he answered that the “Army’s carrier could not take LCA, because the lifts were smaller”. The carrier was built independent of the aircraft.

If we analyse the core issue here, we can drill down to the following basic issue:

  1. Requirements Analysis not done properly

If the teams have done the Requirements Analysis in a structured way initially as described by the CMMI’s Requirements Management Process Area, then the issue could have been identified at an early stage and avoided before it could impact the final product. Most Importantly, the end user requirements have to be taken into consideration at the concept stage. End User requirements should include both explicit and implicit (Hidden/latent) requirements.

Requirements Management process area helps:

  • Managing the requirements,
  • Obtaining the commitment to requirements
  • Managing the requirements changes
  • Maintaining bidirectional traceability of requirements
  • Ensuring synchronization between developed products and requirements
