The selection of model for the CMMI Implementation and Assessment is entirely a matter of choice. When this choice is made, certain factors can be countered in like (a) suitability of the particular CMMI Model (b) the nature of work (business) to the company (c) integration and synergy with existing standards and process frameworks (d) requirements of the market and the industry (e) size of the company (f) geographical distribution of the company, etc… The companies can use the CMMI-SVC model if they carry out services and also product development. It is easily possible to use the CMMI-DEV as a “sub-set framework” while building the “product-development” part of the services with CMM-SVC. An organization can be appraised for CMMI-DEV and CMMI-SVC both. It is important to note that a multi-model appraisal for both CMMI-DEV and CMMI-SVC will be considered as “two different appraisals for planning and reporting purposes”.Hence this has implications of resources and costing and other implications as well. It is best to decide one model and work with the same. However, the choice lies with the company with respect to this decision.
[Note: This is a real-life question asked by a company which carries out product development and services both].
