This is very good question for organizations starting their Process Improvement Journey. Most of the organizations find it difficult to make a choice between ISO 9001 and CMMI for Development Version 1.3. Let us try to find out the best solution for these organizations.
There can be two types of Organizations – One which have primary job of Software Development and other who has a small Software Development Unit and primary Work of the Organization is different from Software Development Work.
If the organization’s primary job is to handle Software Development then they should go with CMMI for Development version 1.3, which is most suited for such organizations. CMMI-DEV provides best practices for Software Development, which has been collected from around the world by Software Engineering Practitioners and Implementers working in different domains.
If the Organization’s primary job is not Software Development and it only have a small Software Development unit then they can go with ISO 9001, which also offers some Clauses for Software Development. But ISO 9001’s focus is on the whole organization including functions like Management, HR, Audit etc. ISO 9001 covers most of the functions and handles Continual Improvement in the organization. Later if their Software Development unit becomes large in the strength they can go for CMMI-DEV Version 1.3 which is more focused on the Software Development.
