When the CMMI model is now more than 17 years old, it is time to look at the history of CMMI Model. The CMMI model, completely and correctly called as CMMI Product Suite, was developed by scientists and process improvement experts at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), Carnegie Mellon University, to refine and further fine-tune the then existing Software Capability Maturity Model (SW-CMM) that was in existence since 1991. The original CMMI Model was published in the Year 2000 by the CMMI Product Team.
As per an SEI Report, CMMI Models are being used by small and large organizations in variety of industry sectors like electronics, health sector, finance, insurance and transportation. The organizations that have adopted and benefitted from the CMMI Model are Boeing, General Motors, JP Morgan, Bosch and many others in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.
The CMMI Product Suite consists of three constellations at present: CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV), CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ), and CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC). There are two other organizational frameworks also: People Capability Maturity Model (People CMM) and Data Maturity Model (DMM).
Currently, the CMMI model is stewarded by CMMI Institute (www.cmmiinstitute.com) which is based at Pittsburgh, USA, and is currently owned by ISACA (www.isaca.org). The Global Impact of CMMI Model is that more than 10000 organizations have used it in one way or the other, it is being used in 101 countries and CMMI Appraisals have been carried out in 98 countries, 12 national governments support the CMMI Model and there are 500 partners of CMMI Institute globally. A new generation of CMMI Model is expected in the Year 2018.
This information can be used by CMMI Consultants while giving background information on CMMI. The CMMI Consultant is often questioned about the historical significance of CMMI and so this information can come in handy for the same.
